Images 1 and 2

This is where you do 2 studies of masters paintings. This is tonal studies, you can only use 3 tones. This is to help with composition, note the highest points and darkest points. You'll realise there is always one surrounded with the other taking a minor part of the area. 

Normally, lots of dark, medium tones, then very few high points. Normally on the details, face, etc. 

Images 3, 4, 5 and 6

studies. Studying is the best and possibly only way to really get good at art. 

Make sure to study at least one master painting, and don't do the whole painting, just little thumbnail snippets of something close up. So you can see the brush strokes, or tones etc nicely.

This is an old painting you have done before, I recommend this because its easier to see improvements by evaluating, taking the tips you have learnt and reapplying it.

re paint the old image, using all the techniques learnt.
